Waterloo Region, Ontario –-Waterloo Regional Police are issuing an alert to the community to review their home security measures and consider additional safeguards for their valuables.

In recent weeks, police have investigated numerous residential break and enter incidents within Waterloo Region and found that these homes had been targeted for collections of high carat gold and other valuables.

Waterloo Regional Police Central Detectives are investigating reports of a suspicious person in the area on Upper Mercer Drive and Fairway Rd N, Kitchener.  On January 1, 2012 at 11:26am police were contacted by a resident reporting seeing someone in their backyard acting in a suspicious manner.

Waterloo Regional Police are currently investigating two incidents in which young females were robbed near bus stops and are urging the public to be vigilant about their surroundings and report suspicious activity.

Synopsis:
On Monday December 12, 2011 at approximately 6pm, a female exited a bus at the terminal on Ainslie St S, Cambridge.

A male came from the rear of the bowling alley and assaulted the victim while grabbing her backpack. The suspect then fled on foot. There were no injuries and nothing was taken.

Waterloo Regional Police continue to investigate the December 5, 2011 robbery at a Cambridge pharmacy as well as a suspicious phone call placed to the pharmacy shortly before the incident occurred.

The investigation has revealed that the caller identified himself as a police officer with a badge number, indicating that a male under surveillance might enter the pharmacy with the intention of committing a robbery. Should this occur, the caller advised the pharmacy to cooperate with the robber who would then be arrested as he left the premises.

Waterloo Regional Police are proactively alerting the community to a credit card security scam.

A victim receives a phone call from a person claiming to work in the Security and Fraud Department of the victim's credit card issuer. The caller has the victim's name and credit card number and will state that there has been an unusual purchase pattern on the card, often in another country and that the credit card company will be assuming that charge, and crediting the victim's account.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service Fraud Branch would like to remind citizens, particularly senior citizens, to be alert to a recent scam.

A number of reports have been received recently in which senior citizens have received unsolicited phone calls.

The caller identifies themselves as a 'grandson' who has been involved in an emergent circumstance such as a motor vehicle collision and is either under arrest, or currently in court facing charges. The caller indicates they need funds wired to them immediately for legal fees and/or court costs.

On July 11, 2011, police were contacted by a Kitchener resident regarding the discovery of a pointed metal object in an ice cream bar. The object was described as a 2 inch sewing needle.

The resident had purchased a box of Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Dark Chocolate ice cream bars on Friday July 8, 2011 at the Food Basics grocery store on Fischer Hallman Road. The product had a "Best-Before" date of 12 January 13

The ice cream and the metal object were returned to the store on July 9, 2011 for further examination. No injuries were sustained as a result of this incident.

June 30, 2011--Waterloo Regional Police are investigating several incidents in recent days in which individuals have been taken to hospital after consuming suspected MDMA (also commonly known as Ecstasy).

In two separate incidents on June 29, 2011, two female victims in their 20's became unwell after attending a nightclub in Waterloo. Both were transported to hospital for treatment.
