Testing Requirements and Selection Process

Each applicant must successfully meet the selection standards set by the Waterloo Regional Police Service and for each of the following phases:

Phase Requirements & Documentation
Phase 1 1. Submission of O.A.C.P. Certificate of Results
2. Completion and submission of the Application for Employment
3. Completion and submission of the Personal History Form

There are three recruit intakes per year starting in January, May and September at the Ontario Police College in Aylmer, ON. Your application will be processed for the next available intake.

Phase 2
(approximately 1-2 hours)
1. Written composition and spelling test

Note: If you are unsuccessful at the testing phase, you must wait 3 months before you may re-apply

2. Pre-Background Questionnaire
3. Completion of the Composition and Spelling Test

Phase 3 (approximately 30 minutes-1 hour) Local Focus Interview with Human Resources

Note: If you are unsuccessful at the LFI phase, you must wait 3 months before you may re-apply

Phase 4 (approximately 2-2.5 hours) Behavioural Event Interview / Essential Competency Interview

Note: If you are unsuccessful at the ECI phase, you must wait 3 months before you may re-apply

Phase 5
(approximately 30-45 minutes)
Board Interview with Chief of Police or Designate

Note: If you are unsuccessful at the Board Interview phase, you must wait 6 months before you may re-apply
 

Phase 6

1. Psychological Assessment and Interview (approximately 2-3 hours)
Note: If you are unsuccessful at the psychological assessment phase, you must wait 1 year before you may re-apply.

2. Background and Reference Check (approximately 1 week)
3. Security Check

Phase 7 1. Conditional Offer of Employment
2. Vision examination-see next section
3. Medical examination-see next section Vision Examination

Vision Examination

  • Uncorrected visual acuity of at least 20/40 with both eyes open required
  • Field-of-vision must not be less than 120 degrees in each eye
  • Colour deficiency must be within established limits
  • Refractive Surgery— Candidates who have had radial keratomy (RK), photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), or laser thermokeratoplasty (LTK) refractive surgery in order to meet the uncorrected visual acuity standard will be required to provide documentation that the visual acuity and refraction have been stable and that glare is not a problem. Two examinations 30 days apart are required.
  • Orthokeratology and Cornea Transplants are NOT accepted

Medical Examination

  • A legally qualified medical practitioner, certifying the applicant is able to perform the physical requirements of the position, must perform the medical examination.
