Waterloo Regional Police urge road users to make safety their top priority with the following winter driving tips.
- During extreme winter conditions, avoid driving if possible
- If you must drive, leave plenty of time to reach your destination and advise family or friends of your intended route and expected arrival time
- Increase the distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you
- Communicate clearly using lights, signals, and horn as appropriate
- Assume the road is slippery: reduce travel speed and start braking sooner
- Be prepared for poor visibility from blowing snow and cross winds in open areas
- Carry an emergency kit and cell phone to call for help
- Reduce distractions and focus on the driving task
- Buckle up, drive safe, drive sober
