Policing in the rural areas of Waterloo Region is unique from the demands of the urban areas. Although the call volume is lower, there is a greater geographical area to cover with a lower population density. It is important for policing to ensure we can respond to emergency calls for service within a reasonable time, and ensure available back-up for officer safety, as identified in Discussion Paper #3.
The 2013 change in the patrol shift schedule facilitated the creation of one Rural Patrol division. As of January 2013, the six rural zones are now operating as a unified division overseen by a new Rural Staff Sergeant, and Rural Sergeants scheduled 24-7. These changes that have been implemented to better serve our rural community are summarized in Rural Policing Summary Paper: Rebuilding to Better Meet the Needs of the Rural Community.
