Waterloo Region, Ontario – On Tuesday, July 11, 2017, officials with the United States Secret Service arrested Ager Hasan, 24, who is charged with second degree murder in connection to a Kitchener homicide.

On April 28, 2017, Melinda Vasilije, 22, was found deceased in her Country Hill Drive residence in Kitchener. The cause of her death was determined to be multiple stab wounds.

A Canada-wide warrant was issued for Hamilton resident Ager Hasan after it was determined he had fled to the United States. Ager Hasan and Melinda Vasilije were known to each other.

Waterloo Region, Ontario – The Waterloo Regional Police Service will hold a press conference on July 12, 2017 to update media on the investigation into the death of Melinda Vasilije, 22.
Melinda Vasilije was found dead inside her residence at 38 Country Hill Drive in Kitchener on April 28, 2017.
Waterloo Regional Police issued a Canada Wide warrant for Ager Hasan on one count of 2nd degree murder. He was arrested on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 in Texas.
An update on this investigation will be provided today.

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Waterloo Regional Police are proud to partner with Canadian Blood Services and local emergency service workers for this year’s Sirens for Life campaign.

The Sirens for Life campaign encourages local emergency service workers and residents to lend their arm and donate blood in support of their local emergency service team.

Emergency service workers often see the urgent need for blood first-hand. In fact, just one person injured in a vehicle collision could need up to 50 blood donations to save their life.

Waterloo Region, Ontario – The Waterloo Region Children’s Safety Village is gearing up to celebrate its 25th anniversary and will be honouring this special occasion by holding a Silver Gala on September 14, 2017.

The Safety Village, located beside the Waterloo Regional Police Headquarters building on Maple Grove Road, first opened in September, 1992 with the goal of educating local students on safety skills that help prevent injury.

New hate crime awareness campaign shares message of inclusion

The Waterloo Regional Police Service is launching a new hate crime awareness campaign, which aims to promote a message of inclusion and acceptance. The campaign, which highlights a ‘Hate is Learned’ theme, features children speaking about the benefits of being inclusive of others regardless of their race, culture, religion, sexual orientation, gender or ability. They offer this important message as a reminder to adults.

Waterloo Region, Ontario – On May 31, 2017, the Waterloo Regional Police Services Board and the Waterloo Regional Police Association were served a class action lawsuit.
The lawsuit alleges systemic and institutional gender-based discrimination and harassment, sexual harassment and sexual assault.
“Some of the allegations attributed by the plaintiffs date back to 1988 and those have only just come to the attention of our Service,” said Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police. “Some were already the subject of an investigation by an independent law firm and dealt with appropriately.”

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Members of the Waterloo Regional Police Service, along with local Special Olympic athletes, are gearing up for the 30th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, scheduled to take place Thursday, June 1, 2017.

Runners, walkers and cyclists will travel several different routes throughout Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge to help raise awareness and funds for the upcoming Special Olympics. A total of 45 kilometres will be covered throughout the day.

This is the second time the police service has flown its Pride flag in front of Police Headquarters at 200 Maple Grove Road in Cambridge. The flag will be raised by Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police, at 10:30 a.m. on May 25.
