Police, community agencies, volunteers work together for student safety

For Immediate Release:  September 12, 2012

Waterloo Region, Ontario – The Waterloo Regional Police Service in partnership with area Fire Services, Regional EMS, the Waterloo Region District School Board and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board are working together to ensure that safety is a top priority during this school year.

Approximately 2,000 student volunteers ranging in age from 10 to 14 years are participating in the annual School Safety Patroller Program which provides training on assisting children to cross streets safely, as well as instruction in basic first aid and bus evacuation procedures.

Upon completion of the program, the new patrollers will be seen at their posts around school areas wearing orange or bright green safety vests. Police would like to remind motorists to be extra cautious whenever children are present.

Training is provided each September to help set a tone around the importance of safety throughout the school year and to provide a reminder that everyone has a responsibility and a role to play in ensuring an incident- free school year.

The current training program is being offered daily Monday September 17 to Thursday September 20, 2012 between 9:15am-2:15pm and again September 24-25 during the same hours.  The course will be conducted at Budd Park on Homer Watson Boulevard in Kitchener.
