Police urge public to make safety their top priority this summer

For Immediate Release:  June 27, 2012

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Summer vacation time has arrived and Waterloo Regional Police would like to offer some basic tips for safety around the home and on the road.

Motorists are reminded to:
•    Drive only when sober- driving while impaired is a recipe for disaster
•    Focus on driving safely and legally and reduce distractions
•    Ensure that everyone is buckled up properly
•    Many people are travelling- allow plenty of time to reach your destination
•    Have your vehicle properly maintained and be prepared for roadside emergencies

Cyclists are reminded to:
•    Follow the rules of the road- remain alert and aware of your surroundings
•    Helmets are mandatory for children, but all cyclists should consider wearing one
•    Communicate properly and make your intentions known to other road users
•    Ensure your bike is properly equipped and maintained

Pedestrians are reminded to:
•    Be aware of your surroundings using all your senses
•    Use sidewalks, walk facing traffic, cross only at designated areas
•    Ensure you are visible to others and wear light coloured clothing at night

Street-proofing tips for children:
•    Never approach a stranger and stay away from vehicles you do not know
•    Walk in groups if this makes you more comfortable
•    Tell parents where you are going, who you are with, and when you will return
•    Avoid secluded areas in parks, alleys, lanes, and empty parking lots
•    Report incidents to police as soon as possible. Call 911 for emergencies only
•    Additional tips can be found at  www.wrps.on.ca

Reduce incidents of property crime:
•    Remove valuables from your parked vehicle and keep doors and windows locked
•    Secure your home by locking doors and windows including screens
•    Use security lighting, motion sensors and lamp timers
•    Ask a trusted neighbour to check on your home while you are away
•    Leave a number where you can be reached and cancel deliveries

By using a few basic safety precautions, we can all help make this summer safer for everyone.
