Counterfeit Currency

If you suspect a bill you are receiving may be counterfeit, remain calm and try to avoid a confrontation – your safety is what is most important.

  • Call 9-1-1 if your safety is at risk.
  • Make note of the description of the person passing the bill and if it is safe to do so, try and obtain a vehicle description and licence plate number.
  • Call police as soon as possible.
  • If you have received the bill from a store or banking institute, notify the staff immediately. They may replace it if they are satisfied they have given it to you.

How to Recognize Counterfeit Currency:
There are a number of security features in bills that safeguard against counterfeiting. Two helpful website resources to educate yourself are: RCMP and Bank of Canada

If in doubt, contact the police and we can assist in determining the authenticity of the bill.
