Internet Safety

In January 2002, the Waterloo Regional Police Service formally recognized the need to counter cybercrimes through the establishment of a Technological Crimes Unit with a specially trained investigator to deal specifically with all types of computer related offences.

To operate effectively, this specialized unit requires sophisticated forensic software and hardware, computer equipment, and specialized computer training. The Technological Crimes Unit has been well equipped and has provided services to major cases including homicides, sexual assaults, missing persons, criminal harassments, Internet frauds, threatening emails, cyber-stalking, child pornography and mischief (relating to data).

Our mandate is to assist investigators with incidents involving computers and the Internet. Whenever computers are seized forensic examination of hard drives and removable media is done.

The Technological Crimes Unit assists investigators by:

  • Aiding in the preparation of search warrants for any criminal investigation involving a computer, both hardware and software, seized digital cameras, Personal Data Assistants (PDA) and cellular phones.
  • Attending on scene during the execution of search warrants to properly seize computer systems and related equipment or electronic information.
  • Conducting a forensic examination of all electronic media for any information that would provide supporting evidence for an investigation.
  • Organize and disclose electronic evidence for follow-up by investigators and for presentation in court during trials.

The Technological Crimes Unit uses advanced technology to combat the new challenges of criminal activity involving cybercrimes.
