In January 2002, the Waterloo Regional Police Service formally recognized the need to counter cybercrimes through the establishment of a Technological Crimes Unit with a specially trained investigator to deal specifically with all types of computer related offences.
To operate effectively, this specialized unit requires sophisticated forensic software and hardware, computer equipment, and specialized computer training.The Technological Crimes Unit has been well equipped and has provided services to major cases including homicides, sexual assaults, missing persons, criminal harassments, Internet frauds, threatening emails, cyber-stalking, child pornography and mischief (relating to data).
Our mandate is to assist investigators with incidents involving computers and the Internet. Whenever computers are seized forensic examination of hard drives and removable media is done.
