Bank Inspector Fraud

In this scam, a person will telephone a potential victim falsely stating that he or she is a bank inspector or police officer investigating a dishonest employee at the bank who is stealing from customers.

The victim is asked to withdraw a significant amount of money from their account and turn it over to the investigator on the pretext that it will assist in catching the dishonest employee.  The victim turns over the money but the "inspector" is not heard from again.

No financial institution or police service would ever ask you to take part in such an investigation.

To Help Prevent Bank Inspector Fraud:

  • Do not give out personal or financial information over the telephone.
  • If this type of phone call is suspected, hang up.
  • Report the incident to the fraud branch of your local police service.
  • Report the incident to your bank manager.
