Computer Virus Scam

The victim receives an unsolicited call from someone advising they suspect or have information that the victim's computer is infected with a virus. They may indicate they are with a computer related company such as Microsoft or Windows.

The caller will offer to assist the victim in identifying the virus and provide a downloadable program to fix the virus and provide protection from further viruses.  In worst cases the suspect will request the victim allow the caller remote access to the computer.

The caller will request payment for their service with a credit card number.
Police advise never to allow someone you do not know to have remote access to your computer. Doing so allows them access to all of the information on your computer and can allow them to install programs that will allow them to capture passwords and all other private information.

Police also caution against providing someone you don't know with your credit card number. If you choose to do so you should monitor your credit card bills closely for unauthorized charges.
