Waterloo Region, Ontario –  The Waterloo Regional Police Service continues to welcome students of all ages back to school this week with an increased presence at school zones across Waterloo Region.

A noticeable and visible increase will be also be seen in the University areas as the Waterloo Regional Police Service supports Project Safe Semester, a month-long campaign that promotes the safety and well-being of University and College students.

This campaign, which includes a Door Knocker event in the neighbourhoods surrounding the Universities, is done in collaboration with Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo campus police, Conestoga College, City of Waterloo By-law and the Waterloo Fire Department.

The campaign kicked off on August 26, 2018 and, in its first week, resulted in 115 charges being laid, which include the following:

Liquor Licence Act                     22

Highway Traffic Act                   79

Trespass to Property Act            3

By-Law                                     1

Other                                        8

CDSA                                       1

Criminal                                    1

These numbers represent a 69 per cent increase over the same time period in 2017.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of all students as well as the entire community,” said Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police. “We will maintain an increased presence in the Universities and College areas to discourage public disorder incidents and unlawful and unsafe behaviour. We want students to have a great experience as they kick off their new academic year, but we want that experience to be a safe and respectful one. It’s about being respectful to yourself, each other and the community as a whole.”

The Waterloo Regional Police Service is dedicated to ensuring the safety of all its community members. Together, we can help make safety a priority throughout the school year.
