Canada Road Safety Week Results in 789 Charges in Waterloo Region

Waterloo Region, Ontario –  The Waterloo Regional Police Service laid a total of 789 road safety charges during Canada Road Safety Week, a seven-day national campaign aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world.

The campaign, which ran from May 15, 2018 to May 21, 2018, focused on behaviours that put drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users at risk. These behaviours include Impaired Driving, Aggressive Driving, Distracted Driving and Failure to Wear a Seatbelt.

In total, the Waterloo Regional Police Service laid the following charges during the 2018 Road Safety Week:

  • Impaired Related Charges: 33
  • Aggressive Driving Charges: 294
  • Distracted Driving Charges (Handheld Device): 84
  • Seatbelt Charges: 17
  • Other Traffic Charges: 361
  • Total Road Safety Charges: 789

In 2017, the following charges were laid:

  • Impaired Related Charges: 14
  • Aggressive Driving Charges: 291
  • Distracted Driving Charges (Handheld Device): 34
  • Seatbelt Charges: 27
  • Other Traffic Charges: 338
  • Total Road Safety Charges: 704

“Road safety is a key priority for our police service every day,” said Waterloo Regional Police Chief Bryan Larkin. “We will continue to enforce these initiatives on a daily bases so we can make sure our roads are as safe as they can be. We need motorists to understand that their behaviour on the road doesn’t just affect them. It affects everyone they share the road with. It is vital that we all work together to keep our roads safe so we can save lives and reduce injuries.”

Canada Road Safety Week is sponsored by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and Transport Canada. This initiative is part of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025, which has a goal of making Canada’s roads the safety in the world by 2025.
