Hazel Grace and the Magic Blanket

Unique. Uplifting. A true shining light.

These are just a few of the words used to describe ‘Hazel Grace,’ also known as Hazel Ward, a dispatcher with the Waterloo Regional Police Service’s Communication branch.

Throughout the years, Hazel – an avid traveler – shared the stories of her many adventures with her colleagues. The stories were so inspiring, they led co-worker Don Callahan, a police officer with WRPS for 19 years, to write a book.

“I just felt the need to give back and to do something special for a very special friend,” he said. “Hazel Grace has such a unique way of viewing the world, viewing life, and shining light wherever she goes. I simply wanted to recognize her for that.”

He decided to surprise her with an illustrated book of her own adventures told in her own ‘Hazel Grace’ way. He enlisted the help of dispatcher Samantha Franken, a talented artist and friend, to illustrate the book.

Together, they came up with a book that captures the real-life adventures of ‘Hazel Grace’ as she travels through Africa, experiencing new things and learning wonderful lessons; all while being comforted by the security of her magic blanket.

“Hazel is such a supportive, uplifting and inspiring woman who reminds me what gratitude means on a daily basis,” says Franken.

All proceeds from the book sales are donated to the charity of Hazel’s choice – AVIELA Inc., an organization that supports the elders and empowers children in the village of Dano, Burkina Faso.
