Chief of Police Selection 2022

One of the most significant responsibilities for the Police Services Board (Board) is to recruit and appoint a Chief of Police. As set in out in section 31(d) of the Police Services Act, the Board has the statutory responsibility to “recruit and appoint the chief of police.”

On July 3, 2022, Chief Bryan Larkin retired from the Waterloo Regional Police Service (Service). Staff Superintendent John Goodman will serve as Chief of Police until a new Chief is appointed.

The Board has hired Boyden Canada, a global talent and leadership advisory firm, to conduct a nation-wide search. “The selection of a new Chief of Police is critical and we are confident Boyden Canada will identify candidates that will reflect the goals and values we expect from our police service,” said Board Chair Karen Redman.

As part of the selection process, the Board consulted with the community and by engaging with the diverse voices within our Region, the Board identified the top qualities and characteristics our community would like to see in our next Chief of Police.
