Deputy Chief - Operations

Kevin Thaler is serving in his 30th year with the Waterloo Regional Police Service.  He currently oversees Police Operations that include Neighbourhood Policing, Investigations, Emergency Response and Intelligence.

Kevin has enjoyed previous assignments in Patrol, Traffic, Divisional detectives, Homicide, Professional Standards and as the Chief's executive officer.  He was previously the Commander at Central Division.  He travelled across Canada in 2004 as part of the Service Delivery Review committee, examining best practices and benchmarking with other major police Services.  The findings of that report led to the development of Waterloo's multi-agency Domestic Violence Branch, and a redeployment of rural policing resources.

Kevin was sworn in as a police cadet on his last day of high school and attended Wilfrid Laurier University part-time, obtaining his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Religious Studies.  He completed the Canadian Risk Management Certificate program through Wilfrid Laurier University and is a graduate of the International Executive Development Program through the Canadian Police College and the Hong Kong Police College.

Kevin is a previous Board member of the Downtown Kitchener BIA, vice-chair of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Youth Committee, and is a past president of the Optimist Club of Kitchener-Waterloo.

Kevin enjoys camping, fishing and a good laugh with friends.  He has been married to Lisa for 20 years and has two children.
