2020 Special Olympics Ontario Spring Games Postponed

Media Release

Waterloo Region, Ontario Due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19, the Waterloo Regional Police Service and Special Olympics Ontario have postponed the 2020 Spring Games.

The Games were scheduled to take place in Waterloo Region on May 21, 2020, to May 23, 2020. More than 2,500 athletes, coaches, staff, volunteers, and spectators were expected to visit the Region.

“We want to thank all the incredible individuals and businesses who stepped up to show their support for the Games,” said Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police. “However, the health and safety of the athletes and our community must be a priority, and we must do our part in stopping the spread of COVID-19. We look forward to working with our friends at Special Olympics Ontario, to schedule a new time in the future when we can safely welcome these talented athletes to our great Region.”

More information on these Games and a future date will be shared when available.

“Our focus, like yours, is on our families, friends, neighbours and the communities where we live,” said Glenn MacDonell, President and CEO of Special Olympics Ontario. “This will be very difficult on our athletes who have qualified and were looking forward to competing against their peers on a Provincial stage.”

The Waterloo Regional Police Service thanks all of the volunteers from Special Olympics Ontario, our community, and our Service, who dedicated their time to planning the Games.

“We will get through this time of uncertainty together,” said Chief Larkin. “This is a time when we must take care of each other and of ourselves. Please practice social distancing, stay home, and keep healthy. We are in this together.”
