Are you a Go Beyond Business?

media release

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Are you a Waterloo Region business owner who likes to Go Beyond?

The Waterloo Regional Police Service and Special Olympics Ontario are excited to launch the Go Beyond Business initiative, which encourages businesses in Waterloo Region to Draft an Athlete in support of the 2020 Spring Games.

When a business drafts an athlete or sponsors the Spring Games, they will receive a window decal to place in the front of their business.

“Our goal is to have every business display a window decal in their front door or window to show that Waterloo Region proudly supports our Special Olympics athletes,” said Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police. “We want the decals to be front and centre when our athletes, their families, coaches, and fans fill the streets of Waterloo Region in May.”

Community members can also draft an athlete and will receive a window decal.

To Draft an Athlete, community members and organizations donate $500 that will go towards sponsoring a competing athlete in the Spring Games, which will be hosted in Waterloo Region May 21, 2020 to May 23, 2020.

Each $500 donation will help cover expenses associated to the Games including, travel, food, accommodations, and competition fees. Other sponsorship opportunities are also available starting at $2,500.

More than 2,500 athletes, coaches, staff, and volunteers will come together to be part of this incredible event and allow Waterloo Region the opportunity to showcase its community and hospitality. The Games will feature five sports: basketball, swimming, rhythmic gymnastics, powerlifting and 10-pin bowling.

Police services throughout Ontario have been hosting Special Olympics Ontario Provincial Games since 1996. This is the first time the Waterloo Regional Police Service will host.

“The window decal will not only show that you are supporting the financial costs associated with the Games, but that you are supporting the talented athletes and their dreams to compete on the Olympic stage,” said Chief Larkin. “Let’s all join together and Go Beyond for these incredible athletes.”

Special Olympics is a national organization dedicated to promoting respect, acceptance, inclusion and human dignity for people with intellectual disabilities through sports.
