Become a Police Chief for a Day 2025

Media Release

Waterloo Region, Ontario – The Waterloo Regional Police Service is once again looking for a new junior Chief for its annual ‘Chief for a Day’ contest.

The contest, launching on April 8, 2025, is open to all students in grades 5 to 7 across Waterloo Region. Participants are invited to enter the contest by writing a short essay, creating a video, or producing a piece of artwork that answers the question: What would you do to make a positive impact in your community if you were Chief for a day?

Winners (a junior Chief and two junior Deputy Chiefs) will be announced on May 16, 2025, during Police Week in Ontario. Winners will report for duty at police headquarters on June 10, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"We're thrilled to open our doors to aspiring youth in Waterloo Region and look forward to hearing their ideas about what they can do to make a meaningful and positive contribution to the community,” said Mark Crowell, Chief of Police. “Empowering youth today builds a better tomorrow.”

Once chosen, the junior Chief and junior Deputy Chiefs will have the opportunity to get fitted in a police uniform, tour police headquarters, check out the inside of a police cruiser, visit our canine unit, interact with police officers throughout the day, and more.

Contest entries can be submitted to police headquarters, located at 200 Maple Grove Road in Cambridge, through our social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram), or by e-mail to publicinfo@wrps.on.ca.

Entries must be submitted by May 13, 2025, and include a name and contact information.
