Police Arrest Wanted Male after Foot Pursuit in Waterloo

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Two officers and a Police Service Dog were injured during an arrest of a wanted individual in Waterloo. 

On April 12, 2023, at approximately 4:40 p.m., police located a male wanted on a warrant for violent offences in the area of Hazel Street and Austin Drive. The male attempted to flee on foot and was arrested by members of WRPS’ Emergency Response Team and Canine Team.

Upon arrest, the male was found to be in possession of suspected drugs.

During the foot pursuit, two WRPS officers sustained injuries while scaling a fence, with one of the officers taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police Service Dog Nicho sustained a wound to his abdomen and received care at a local animal hospital.

The wanted male received treatment at a local hospital for a minor injury sustained as a result of a canine bite.

On April 13, 2023, as part of the ongoing investigation, a search warrant was completed at the male’s residence. A loaded handgun, suspected fentanyl, and identity documents were located and seized.

The male, a 20-year-old from Waterloo, has been charged with several offences, including: 

  • Assault Cause Bodily Harm - Choke, Suffocate, or Strangle
  • Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm 
  • Careless Use of a Firearm
  • Possess Firearm with Altered Serial Number
  • Possession of an Identity Document

The accused was held in police custody for a bail hearing.
