Project Safe Semester Results in 310 Charges

Waterloo Region, Ontario –  The Waterloo Regional Police Service issued 310 charges during Project Safe Semester, a month-long campaign which promotes the safety and well-being of university and college students.

The offences include the following:

During Homecoming-related events, police laid an additional 165 charges, including:

  • 85 Liquor Licence Act offences
  • 59 Highway Traffic Act offences
  • 15 Criminal Code and drug-related offences

Police also made five arrests, including the arrest of an individual in relation to an incident that involved a stolen vehicle observed by police in the area of University Avenue West in Waterloo.

On September 25, 2021, at approximately 11:30 p.m., officers attempted to make a traffic stop when the male driver of the vehicle fled the area and drove through fencing at both ends of Ezra Avenue at a high rate of speed. The driver then continued onto Union Street, while continuing to travel at a high rate of speed. The driver struck a roundabout at Union Street and Margaret Avenue and attempted to flee on foot. The male was then approached by another male as he attempted to flee. The driver threatened the victim with a knife and a physical altercation ensued. The victim as able to restrain the driver until police arrived.

As a result of the investigation, a 32-year-old Waterloo male was charged with 12 criminal offences, including Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Stolen Property, Dangerous Driving and Possession of a Prohibited Weapon.

Even though Project Safe Semester has come to a close, the Waterloo Regional Police Service will continue proactive enforcement in the university district along with school zones to ensure the safety of everyone.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service would like to thank all community partners who worked together to ensure public safety during Homecoming 2021. This includes the City of Waterloo, The Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services, Waterloo Fire Rescue Service, Wilfrid Laurier University, the Wilfrid Laurier University Student’s Union, the University of Waterloo and the University of Waterloo Federation of Students.
