Waterloo Region, Ontario – The Waterloo Regional Police Service wrapped up its seventh annual Backpack Challenge this week with record-breaking success.
The Challenge, which ran throughout the summer, encouraged residents and businesses to purchase new backpacks, lunch bags, school supplies, or gift cards to be donated to families in need.
Due to the generosity of the community, the Backpack Challenge raised approximately 6,500 backpacks this year. All items were donated directly to families in need through more than 20 child and youth organizations throughout Waterloo Region.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to each individual, organization, and business that made a donation, helping to bring smiles to thousands of children as they head back to school,” said Mark Crowell, Chief of Police. “We are immensely proud to be part of such a supportive and caring community.”
More than 22,500 backpacks have been collected over the past seven years, along with thousands of dollars in gift cards and school supplies.
Thank you, Waterloo Region!
