Special Investigation Unit Invokes Mandate after WRPS Related Shooting Incident in Kitchener

Waterloo Region, Ontario – The Special Investigations Unit is investigating the death of a male after a Waterloo Regional Police officer discharged their firearm during a call for service in Kitchener.

On February 19, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., police responded to a disturbance in the area of Brybeck Crescent and Karn Street.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a male with an edged weapon. There was an interaction between officers and the male, and, as a result, an officer discharged their firearm.

A 31-year-old male was shot and transported to hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Waterloo Regional Police notified the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), and they have invoked its mandate.
