Back to SearchWaterloo Region, Ontario – The Waterloo Regional Police Service continues to take part in Project Safe Semester by maintaining a noticeable and visible presence in the Universities and College areas.
The month-long program, which promotes the safety and well-being of University and College students, includes a Door Knocker event in the neighbourhoods surrounding the Universities. This event is done in collaboration with Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo campus police, Conestoga College, City of Waterloo By-law and the Waterloo Fire Department.
The campaign kicked off on August 26, 2018 and, as of September 15, 2018, a total of 507 charges have been laid. This includes 115 charges laid in the first week and 219 charges in the second week.
During the third week of the program, from September 9, 2018 to September 15, 2018, a total of 173 charges were laid, representing a 140 per cent increase over the same time period in 2017. This includes charges laid under the Liquor Licence Act (73), Highway Traffic Act (79), Trespass to Property Act (4), By-Law (3), CDSA (2) and Criminal (12).
“Our enhanced police visibility and enforcement in the Universities and College areas is part of our commitment to ensuring public safety for everyone, including the students, residents and the community as a whole,” said Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police. “Project Safe Semester is a joint effort by our community partners to help educate students on the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse, as well as a chance to encourage students to have fun in a safe and respectable way.”
