Waterloo Regional Police Arrest Driver of Stolen Vehicle after Driver Rammed Police Cruiser

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Waterloo Regional Police have arrested the driver of a stolen motor vehicle after a vehicle was stolen on January 13, 2023, in the area of Pineview Avenue in Cambridge. 

On January 16, 2023, at approximately 8:55 a.m., a WRPS Neighbourhood Policing South Division officer observed a stolen Hyundai vehicle in the area of Ballantyne Avenue. 

The driver immediately fled the area after observing police. 

The officer was able to locate the vehicle again in the area of Chalmers Street South, at which point the driver fled in the vehicle and allegedly did not stop for a stop sign. 

Police were able to locate the stolen vehicle again in the area of Franklin Boulevard. The driver, again in an attempt to flee, drove over the median as officers pursued. The driver then intentionally struck a police cruiser that was partially blocking the roadway in an effort to stop the driver of the stolen vehicle. 

Due to a concern for public safety, police stopped the pursuit. 

The officer did not sustain physical injuries as a result of the collision. 

Through further investigation, police were able to locate the stolen vehicle and arrested the driver. 

As a result of the investigation, a 21-year-old Cambridge male has been charged with numerous offences, including:

  • Theft of a Motor Vehicle 
  • Fail to Comply with Release Order - two counts 
  • Possession of Stolen Property under $5000 
  • Flight from Police
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle 
  • Fail to Stop for Police
  • Disobey Stop Sign - Fail to Stop 
  • Fail to Remain at the Scene of a Collision 
  • Drive Motor Vehicle - No Licence 

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.
