Waterloo Regional Police Continue to Investigate a Hate-Motivated Assault on LRT

UPDATED MEDIA RELEASE:

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Waterloo Regional Police have made an arrest in a hate-motivated incident that occurred in Waterloo.

On June 1, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the victim was riding the LRT ION train, travelling from Kitchener to Waterloo. The victim was wearing a Pride shirt and was approached by an unknown male who made derogatory identity-based comments. The suspect then assaulted the victim.

As a result of the investigation, on June 4, 2024, a 17-year-old Waterloo male was arrested and charged with Assault.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on July 12, 2024.

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Waterloo Regional Police are continuing to investigate a hate-motivated assault that occurred in Waterloo. 

On June 1, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the victim was riding the LRT ION train travelling from Kitchener to Waterloo.

The victim was approached by an unknown male, who began to berate him by making racial and derogatory comments. Through the altercation, the suspect escalated in behaviour and assaulted the victim.

There were no injuries sustained and currently no safety concerns for the public.

The investigation is ongoing by WRPS’ General Investigations Unit.
