Waterloo Regional Police Continue to Investigate House Explosion in Kitchener

UPDATED MEDIA RELEASE:

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Waterloo Regional Police continue to investigate a house explosion that occurred on January 18, 2023, in the area of Elm Ridge Drive and Queen’s Boulevard in Kitchener.

A 35-year-old Kitchener male has since been pronounced deceased. 

The investigation is ongoing.

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Police have completed a search warrant at a home in the area of Elm Ridge Drive and Queen’s Boulevard in Kitchener after an explosion on January 18, 2023.

On January 20, 2023, WRPS’ Drugs and Firearms Unit took carriage of the ongoing investigation and a search warrant was conducted at the home.

During the search warrant, evidence consistent with illicit drug production was seized from the home.

The adult male and female who sustained serious injuries in the explosion remain in hospital at this time.

The investigation is ongoing and criminal charges are anticipated.

Waterloo Region, Ontario – An investigation into a house explosion in Kitchener has been deemed criminal in nature by the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office.

On January 18, 2023, at approximately 11:40 p.m., emergency services responded to the area of Elm Ridge Drive and Queen’s Boulevard in Kitchener after receiving reports of a house explosion.

An adult male and an adult female were transported by Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services to an out-of-region hospital with serious injuries. They remain in hospital at this time.

Two children were transported by Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services to a local hospital with minor injuries and have since been released.

On January 19, 2023, Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshall (OFM) declared that the investigation into the explosion is criminal in nature. The investigation is ongoing by WRPS’ General Investigations Unit and Drugs and Firearms Unit and the OFM.

Waterloo Region, Ontario – On January 18, 2023, at approximately 11:40 p.m., emergency services responded to the area of Elm Ridge Drive and Queen’s Boulevard in Kitchener after receiving reports of a house explosion.

An explosion occurred inside a residence and caused extensive damage. The residence and neighbouring units sustained significant structural damage.

An adult male and an adult female were both transported by Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services to an out-of-region hospital with serious injuries.

Two children were transported by Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services to a local hospital with minor injuries.

A Grand River Transit bus was placed in the area to provide shelter to residents displaced by the explosion. The Red Cross was contacted and will be assisting residents.

The investigation remains ongoing by WRPS’ General Investigations Unit and the Ontario Fire Marshall. At this point, the cause of the explosion has not been determined.
