Waterloo Region, Ontario – On January 1, 2022, police received a report of a possible rental scam involving students in Waterloo.

Between October 2021 and November 2021, an unknown suspect(s) posted a rental advertisement on social media. The post advertised available sublet rentals at both 130 Columbia Street West and 365 Albert Street in Waterloo.

Six victims were contacted on social media regarding these sublet opportunities. The suspect(s) requested that each victim sign a lease document and provide an e-transfer down payment to secure the rental.

Each of the six victims attended the two respective addresses on January 1, 2022, discovering that their lease agreements were not valid.

Police believe there may be other victims and are asking anyone with information about the rental fraud scam to contact police by calling 519-570-9777 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
