Waterloo Region, Ontario – Waterloo Regional Police Chief Bryan Larkin will join students from St. Daniel Catholic Elementary School and officials from Nutrition For Learning to help kick-off the Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign.
Chief Larkin and members of the Waterloo Regional Police Service will attend the school, located at 39 Midland Drive in Kitchener, at 8:30 a.m. on September 17, 2018. They will take part in a cookie decorating event to help raise awareness of the week-long Tim Hortons campaign, which raises money for local charities and organizations.
“This is such a great campaign that has supported organizations in our Region for years,” said Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police. “I encourage every member of our community to go out, purchase a cookie and help those who need it the most. After all, behind every smile cookie purchased is a real smile of someone in our community who is need.”
Among the local organizations chosen to receive donations is Nutrition For Learning, which operates 133 student nutrition programs in both the Waterloo Catholic District School Board and the Waterloo Region District School Board. The student nutrition programs provide healthy meals and snacks to more than 23,000 students daily throughout Waterloo Region.
“Research has proven that students who come to school hungry don’t perform as well in the classroom and have difficulty concentrating,” said Brian Banks, Partnership Development for Nutrition For Learning. “Our programs help with the physical, cognitive, behavioural and academic needs of these children and we are very grateful to be part of this great campaign.”
Loretta Notten, WCDSB Director of Education, echoes the importance of the Nutrition For Learning program.
“The ability for students to have access to healthy snacks throughout the day better prepares them for learning, as well as helps promote healthy eating habits.”
The Smile Cookie campaign runs from September 17, 2018 to September 23, 2018. Cookies can be purchased for $1 with the full amount being donated to charities, hospitals and organizations across Canada.
