Waterloo Regional Police Lay Manslaughter charge in Drug Overdose Investigation

Waterloo Region, Ontario – Waterloo Regional Police have charged a Kitchener man with manslaughter in connection to a fatal drug overdose that occurred earlier this year.

On February 25, 2020, police responded to the area of King Street West in Kitchener after receiving a report of a possible drug overdose. 

Upon arrival, police located two males. A 26-year-old male was pronounced deceased at the scene. The second male, a 25-year-old, was transported to hospital. He has since been released.

After a thorough investigation by members of the Waterloo Regional Police Service’s General Investigations unit and the Major Crime unit, investigators have determined that the suspect trafficked fentanyl, which had been purported to be cocaine.

On April 9, 2020, police arrested a 39-year-old Kitchener male in connection to the incident. He has been charged with Manslaughter, Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm, Trafficking and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking.

He is scheduled to appear in court on April 10, 2020.
