Waterloo Region, Ontario – A 21-year-member of the Waterloo Regional Police Service has been charged by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in relation to an investigation into an on-duty incident.
Sergeant Richard Dorling was arrested November 27, 2018 and charged with one count of Attempt Murder, one count of Aggravated Assault, one count of Discharge Firearm with Intent and one count of Discharge Firearm Reckless Endangerment.
The charges are in relation to an incident that occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. on March 31, 2018 in the area of Dickie Settlement Road in Cambridge. An interaction occurred between a suspect and the officer and the officer discharged his service firearm. The suspect sustained injuries sufficient for the SIU to invoke their mandate.
As the SIU is an independent investigative oversight body, the Waterloo Regional Police Service is not provided the underlying details that led to the charges.
Under the authority of the Police Services Act of Ontario, Sergeant Dorling has been placed on paid administrative suspension and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Kitchener on December 19, 2018.
The Waterloo Regional Police Service’s Professional Standards Branch will also be conducting a review of the circumstances following the completion of the court proceedings.
