Waterloo Region, Ontario – The Waterloo Regional Police Service has partnered with Axon Public Safety Canada in an effort to better leverage evidence based technology while maintaining physical distance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new technology, which will be used by members of our Frontline Support Unit, will allow members of the community to share digital evidence electronically instead of an officer being dispatched to collect it.
The Axon Citizen for Officers technology allows a secure link to be sent to individuals via text or e-mail. Once opened, individuals can upload evidence, such as images and videos, which will be stored on a secure cloud based evidence management system, Axon Evidence.
“We are thrilled to know that our technology can help play a part in keeping WRPS officers, as well as community members, safe by allowing digital evidence to be shared electronically and minimize any unnecessary physical contact during this current crisis,” says Vishal Dhir, Managing Director of Axon Public Safety Canada.
If needed, the Service may also use the Citizen for Communities technology, which allows any member of the community to upload evidence to a public portal. The Axon Evidence Submission Portal link is created during investigations that require public assistance, such as a missing person investigation.
“During times like these, when it is essential to practice physical distance, services like these are vital to the health and safety of our community and of our members,” said Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police. “This new technology will also result in increased time for officers to address other priority calls and focus on other enforcement initiatives throughout Waterloo Region.”
The pilot project, which is being offered free to the Service, will run until December 31, 2020.
