Waterloo Region ON – The Waterloo Regional Police Service is proud to take part in and support Canada Road Safety Week, a national campaign aimed at making our roads safer.
During Canada Road Safety Week, which takes place May 16 to May 23, 2017, Waterloo Regional Police will join other services across the country in initiatives that focus on dangerous driving behaviours, including impaired driving (alcohol and/or drug related), occupant restraint use and all aspects related to aggressive and distracted driving.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” says Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police. “The initiatives being conducted during Canada Road Safety Week are ones that we enforce on a daily basis to ensure the safety of our community. It is vital that we all work together to keep our roads as safe as possible so we can save lives and reduce injuries.”
Canada Road Safety Week is an annual collaborative effort by Canadian Police Services to target high risk driving behaviours that puts drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users at risk.

- In 2013, there were 1,923 motor vehicle fatalities in Canada. 21 per cent of motor vehicle driver fatalities were people aged 15 to 24 in 2013.
- Each year in Canada, about 2,000 people are killed and 165,000 are injured while using our roadways.
- In 2010, there were 1,082 automobile fatalities related to impairment.
- MADD Canada estimates there are somewhere between 1,250 and 1,500 impairment-related crash deaths in Canada each year.
