Waterloo Regional Police Raise Awareness of Text With 9-1-1 Service

Waterloo Region, Ontario – The Waterloo Regional Police Service is pleased to join other services from across Canada to raise awareness of the Text With 9-1-1 program.

This service, launched last year, enhances personal safety and access to 9-1-1 for members of the deaf, deafened, hard of hearing and speech impaired community (DHHSI).

The service allows members of the DHHSI community to use text messaging to connect with 9-1-1. They first make a voice call by dialing 9-1-1. The operator will answer the voice call, receive an alert that communication needs to occur via text and will then start the text-messaging process inquiring about the emergency.

To use the T9-1-1 service, members of the DHHSI community must register with their service provider. Once registration is complete, they will receive an email and text message confirming their registration.

Things to remember when communicating via text for 9-1-1 emergency:
• If you do not receive a text message right away, do not hang up. There may be a delay due to cell connection or a high volume of calls.
• Remember to provide the most important information – directions to your emergency and other details that can lead emergency crews to you
• Text messages should be brief and to the point. Do not use short forms, slang or abbreviations.
• If you don’t understand what the operator is asking you, please tell him or her. They can ask the question again in a different way.

Since its inception last year, Text With 9-1-1 has been used 14 times by members of our community and we want to encourage other members of the DHHSI to become part of this important messaging system.

“Text with 9-1-1 for the DHHSI community is an important technological step forward in ensuring fast and effective access to 9-1-1 services,” said Inspector Mark Bullock. “Many years of work went into making this technology available and we encourage all members of the DHHSI community to register their cellular phones. Waterloo Region is pleased to offer this service and continues to work diligently at preparing for future advancements in 911 capabilities.”
