Waterloo Region, Ontario- Waterloo Regional Police are reminding cyclists of the "Snap 'N Save" program as we approach the summer months.
Last year, Waterloo Regional Police received more than 1100 reports of bicycle thefts. This year, WRPS has received 238 reports.
In some of the occurrences, the bikes were not properly secured with a lock. In other instances, the lock was cut. Out of the 238 bike thefts this year, 98 occurred by the thief entering a shed or garage.
It is not always possible to prevent a bike theft, but in the event that your bike is stolen, we encourage you to have the proper documentation.
WRPS has created the Snap N' Save program, which encourages cyclists to take two photos:
- A photo with your bike.
- A photo of the bike’s serial number.
This process will help police identify who the stolen bike may belong to, and return it to the rightful owner.
Other safety tips to consider:
- Do not leave your bike unattended.
- Always lock your bike to a solid object.
- Make sure that your lock cannot be cut.
- Lock your bike in a well-lit area with high foot traffic.
- Bring your bike in at night. If you are storing it in a garage or shed, ensure that it is closed and secure.
If you become of victim of a stolen bicycle, report the incident to police either online by visiting wrps.on.ca or by calling 519-570-9777.
