Waterloo Regional Police Responds to New Safer Ontario Act

Waterloo Region, Ontario – The Waterloo Regional Police Service welcomes the introduction and recent changes to the Police Services Act and thanks the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police for their partnership in advocating for oversight.

The new Safer Ontario Act provides Police Service Boards and Police Chiefs “an opportunity to be more creative, innovative and dynamic with the deployment of resources while ensuring the highest quality and level of police services to the communities we serve,” said Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police.

“We fully support the recommendations and urge the government to invest appropriately in oversight agencies, as well as the Ontario Police College.”

As President of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, Chief Larkin said “we firmly believe that policing in Ontario is one of the greatest institutions and is often looked at as an example of doing things well. The new Police Service Act allows us to focus on moving the areas of crime prevention and public and social disorder upstream, while also targeting those that prey on the vulnerable, including organized crime groups.”

We look forward to actively working with government to enact and implement these recommendations.
