Waterloo Region, Ontario – The Waterloo Regional Police Service is pleased to announce its migration to a new two-way voice radio communication platform.

The new technology will replace an ageing 20-year-old voice radio system and will provide enhanced features and reliable two-way voice communications between first responders.

All transmissions through this new technology are digitally encrypted and will enhance public safety within Waterloo Region.

“The P25 Voice Radio System is state-of-the-art technology that will benefit not only Emergency Services in Waterloo Region but the community as a whole,” said Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police. “This modernized voice radio system will increase officer safety, confidentiality and operational security.”

WRPS values its positive relationship with media organizations and the community and will continue to provide timely, up-to-date information as quickly as possible.

A designated telephone line and email address have been set up to reach the Public Information Unit, which is staffed Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The direct number to call is 519-570-9777 ext. 8188. The email address is publicinfo@wrps.on.ca

Police and Fire Services within the Region are now live on the new system, and other Regional agencies will migrate over to the new system during the next several months.

The total cost of the new P25 Voice Radio System is approximately $30 million.
