Back to SearchWaterloo Region, Ontario – The Waterloo Regional Police Service is pleased to join enforcement agencies across the country to take part in Canada Road Safety Week, a seven-day national campaign aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world.
The focus of the national campaign, which runs May 15, 2018 to May 21, 2018, is on behaviours that put drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users at risk. This year, the goal is to take the ‘D’ out of Driving. Each day of Canada Road Safety Week will be dedicated to one key risk factor for road safety, reminding Canadians not to drive Drunk (alcohol-impaired), Drugged (drug-impaired), Drowsy (fatigue-impaired), Distracted, Dangerously (aggressive driving) or Detached (without proper occupant restraints).
“Road safety is a key priority for our police service,” said Waterloo Regional Police Chief Bryan Larkin. “When you get behind the wheel and decide to drive impaired, distracted or aggressively, you are not only putting your own life at risk, you are risking the lives of everyone you share the road with. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
This week, Waterloo Regional Police officers will be taking part in enforcement efforts surrounding road safety initiatives. A focus will be put on safe cycling and the importance of sharing the road with vulnerable street users. So far in 2018, officers have responded to 69 personal injury collisions involving cyclists in Waterloo Region. In 2017, a total of 221 personal injury collisions involving cyclists were reported, including one fatality. The two major causes of collisions were due to cyclists disobeying traffic controls and failing to yield the right of way.
Canada Road Safety Week is sponsored by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and Transport Canada. This initiative is part of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025, which has a goal of making Canada’s roads the safety in the world by 2025.
