Waterloo Regional Police Welcome New “Youthful” Police Chief and Deputy Chiefs

Waterloo Region, Ontario – The Waterloo Regional Police Service is ready to welcome its new Police Chief and two Deputy Chiefs to headquarters on Thursday, June 20, 2019, as part of its annual Police Chief for a Day contest.

WRPS is excited to have the following three students from Waterloo Region take on their new positions:

  • Police Chief: Layla Nichol
  • Deputy Chief: Julianna Merritt
  • Deputy Chief: Mehar Joneja

The ‘Chief for a Day’ contest, held in celebration of Police Week in Ontario, was open to all Waterloo Region students in Grade 5 to Grade 7. Students were asked to submit an essay describing what they would do to make a difference in their community.

“We are excited to welcome Chief Layla Nichol, Deputy Chief Julianna Merritt and Deputy Chief Mehar Joneja,” said Bryan Larkin, chief of police. “Our youth are our future and we look forward to hearing some fresh ideas from our new Chief and Deputies throughout the day. This will be a rewarding experience, not only for these youthful leaders, but also for our members.”

The new Chief and Deputy Chiefs will visit headquarters on June 20, 2019, and will be given an official WRPS uniform shirt and forage cap to wear for the day. They will have the opportunity to tour police headquarters, check out the inside of a police cruiser, visit with our canine unit, interact with police officers throughout the day, and take part in a media conference.

WRPS invites the media to join youthful Chief Nichol, Deputy Chief Merritt and Deputy Chief Joneja for a media conference at 3 p.m.
