Waterloo Region, Ontario – Waterloo Regional Police have arrested a male posing as a government agent and defrauding multiple victims.
On November 23, 2023, members of the Organized Financial Crime Team completed two search warrants, one in Waterloo and one in Halton region, and arrested a 49-year-old Waterloo male.
Through investigation, police learned that over the last 15 years, the male posed as a Canadian Security Intelligence Service agent and established romantic relationships with female victims. The victims were convinced to make fictitious investments and support the male’s lifestyle. In total, the male defrauded dozens of victims, with losses totaling over two million dollars.
As a result of the investigation, the male has been charged with the following offences:
- Fraud over $5000
- Possession of stolen property over $5000
The accused is scheduled to appear in court on January 8, 2024.
