Recently, the Waterloo Regional Police Service commenced a review to determine its internal use of Clearview AI software.
It has been determined that the WRPS Cybercrime Unit, which primarily investigates sexual offences involving children, acquired a free Clearview AI licence that was provided at an international conference on Child Exploitation in November, 2019.
The internal review has since revealed that members from Investigative Services (Cybercrime/Child Exploitation, Missing Persons and Criminal Intelligence) used the software between November 17, 2019 and February 14, 2020, to attempt to identify victims and suspects during investigations.
All WRPS members have been issued a directive by Chief Bryan Larkin to cease all use of facial recognition technology, including the use of Clearview AI, until privacy concerns are adequately addressed and proper policies for its use are developed.
