WRPS Joins the Bell Let’s Talk Conversation in Support of Mental Health Awareness

media release

Today, on January 28, 2021, the Waterloo Regional Police Service joins the nation in conversation, in support of Bell Let’s Talk Day and mental health awareness.

This past year has been challenging. The pandemic has caused confusion and uncertainty and has forced many people into isolation. To help mark the significance of Bell Let’s Talk Day, the Waterloo Regional Police Service has produced a video that demonstrates the emphasis on ending the stigma around mental illness and accessing support. It also demonstrates the Service’s commitment to ensuring that residents of Waterloo Region receive the proper treatment when dealing with a mental health crisis by highlighting the partnership with the IMPACT team.

The IMPACT team consists of eight mental health clinicians that work alongside officers while attending mental health calls. From January 2020 to September 2020, the IMPACT team responded to 687 calls for service and almost 80 per cent of those calls were diverted and required no hospitalization.

“Sometimes all that it takes is a listening ear,” says Chief Bryan Larkin. “Now more than ever, every action counts. We encourage you to connect with your friends and family virtually. It’s important to share, listen and comfort one another.”
