Special constables are civilian employees that are appointed by the Police Services Board and the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. The appointment allows special constables to have some use of force options, some police officer powers, and the status of a peace officer. Duties
At the Waterloo Regional Police Service, some of the special constable's responsibilities are:
- Providing assistance to police officers
- Transporting, monitoring, controlling, and receiving custody of prisoners
- Prisoner security in, during, and out of court and in custodial facilities
- Maintaining courtroom decorum
- Searching the general public within the courthouse in accordance with WRPS procedures
- Serving of Summonses and Subpoenas
- Fingerprinting and photographing criminally charged persons

Qualifications
All job qualifications will be listed on our job posting under the current job opportunities section when we are recruiting for special constables. Basic requirements for the position of special constable include:
- Valid CPR (basic rescuer level) and Standard First Aid certificate from an accredited agency
- Constable Selection System Hearing and Vision Examination Forms
- Valid Class “G” Ontario driver’s licence with no more than six demerit points
- Ability to achieve a level 5.5 on the 20m shuttle run
Location
Special constables at the Waterloo Regional Police Service work primarily at the Courthouse and Central Division. The Special constables working out of the courthouse work modified day shifts, depending on what is required, and special constables working out of central division follow our 12 hour shift rotating schedule.
